Whether you're just beginning or returning to your family history, I can help uncover your Scottish roots. I offer professional, personalised research tailored to your needs. From tracing full family trees to breaking down brick walls, I provide the local knowledge and archive access you need.

Where Do We Begin?

With just a few details – such as a name and approximate dates of birth, marriage, or death – it’s often possible to begin research. Scottish statutory records (births, marriages, deaths) began in 1855. Census records are available every ten years from 1841 to 1921. Earlier records include Old Parish Registers and kirk session minutes.

Each family story is unique. Some records are available online, but others still require detective work in local archives, or knowledge of the local area and sources.

How Far Back Can We Go?

On average, a Scottish family tree can be traced back to between 1750 and 1780. In some cases, research can reach the early 1600s, depending on record survival and location.

As an example, I’ve traced my maternal Mackintosh line back to the 1770s. The photograph here shows the family in 1921.

Why Choose a Genealogist?

Genealogy is more than a hobby – it's about connection, identity, and understanding your place in the world. Some clients want to explore their ancestry; others want a special family tree as a gift. Whatever your reason, I offer a thoughtful, expert service.
